A key reference in the world of mountaineering, beloved by both top mountaineers and international stars, the Glacier model by VUARNET is now a timeless style icon.
This winter, for the brand’s 60th anniversary, Vuarnet is producing a new limited edition version, the GLACIER 1957. The Glacier is at the peak of style and function more than ever before.
1974 — The Start of a Legend
The first Glacier model by Vuarnet was made in 1974, in a version designed and intended for mountaineering. In order to ensure maximum protection, it is equipped with Side case in supple leather that completely protect from light and “ Eclipse ” mineral glass specially designed by Vuarnet for ultra-bright?locations. To offer the ease of use, arms were equipped with adjustable fastenings to stay in place perfectly on?the face and made in nylon, a soft, unalterable and lightweight material.
Indeed, one of the first to adopt them was the talented mountaineer Jean Afanassieff, the first French climber to conquer Everest on 15 October 1978 with Nicolas Jaeger and Pierre Mazeaud. He contributed a great deal to making this model famous among all lovers of mountain pursuits. Its success very quickly began to extend beyond the summits, seducing celebrities such as Miles Davis who regularly wore the model on stage, most notably during his last concert in Paris in 1991. Kurt Russell also sported them in 1982 in John Carpenter’s film The Thing.
The Glacier model has become a style signature, embraced by the wider public and attaining global success.
2014 — RETURN TO THE SUMMIT
Vuarnet has decided to return to its roots, introducing a new version of the Glacier model designed as a real technical gem. The essentials are still respected, but with the addition of major innovations in order to make it a real jewel of technicality. It is no longer nylon but built with a metal acetate combination for a more urban touch. The side shells are now removable to allow a daily wear as well as the cord that replaces the hook branches.
Once again, success awaits. Its unique design and ultra-technical nature even won over the most famous secret agent in history, Daniel Craig, in the latest James Bond film Spectre, as well as Jake Gyllenhaal in the film Everest by Baltasar Kormakur. ?
Today, the new brand ambassador Vincent Cassel proudly wears the Glacier model.
WINTER 16/17 — 60th ANNIVERSARY LIMITED EDITION
This winter, for its 60th anniversary, Vuarnet is producing the Glacier 1957 as a limited edition version.
The mirror shine of the blue, silver or red mineral lenses combined with a coating of the metallic cables contrasts perfectly with the matte black treatment of the metal and acetate frames.
The “punched” leather of the detachable side pieces reinforces the sporty character of the Glacier 1957.
The perfect combination of style and function that has been the very essence of VUARNET since 1957, the Glacier 1957 gives the impression of elegance in movement.
